    Dogfish Head Immort Ale

    dogfish-head-immort-aleBeer-a-Day #150

I was thinking of doing something lighter, but the description sucked me in.

Vast in character, luscious and complex, this smooth, full-bodied ale reveals interwoven notes of maple, vanilla & oak.

According to the website, Immort Ale is made with peat-smoked barley, organic juniper berries, vanilla, and maple syrup; aged on oak and fermented with a blend of English and Belgian yeasts.

    Oh my!

Clear mahogany with a strong head. Lots of aromatics, headlined with the aforementioned maple syrup and juniper berries. Lots of complex flavors; thick, with a decent amount of heat from the alcohol. This is definitely a sipping beer. I like it, and I’m going to go back and get more to cellar.

    Reminder: Session #28 – June 5, 2009

The Session - Beer Blogging FridayThe Session is a monthly one-day event held by beer bloggers around the world, where they each post their thoughts on a unified theme.

That theme, for June, is Think/Drink Globally, hosted by Brian Yaeger at Red, White, and Brew.

American Craft Beer Week is May 11-17. But us beer bloggers know that craft beer is to be supported year-round, and that it doesn’t just come from America. So, in honor of Global Craft Beer Forever, I pose everyone writes about the farthest brewery (including brewpubs) you have visited and specifically the best beer you had there. Again, not your favorite or any old brewery you’ve been to, but the one that is the longest haul away, be it by airplane, car, ferry, rickshaw, whatever. (If you blog about beer but have never been to a House of Brewing, get on it!)

Then, the last part, since this exercise gives us an excuse to drink beer, do one of the following:

    • if you brought home a bottle while visiting the brewery and have it secreted away, crack it open.
    • if you don’t have any left from that visit but the particular beer is available where you live (or if not your fave from said brewery, another brand from it), go get one.
    • otherwise, find a local beer of the same style and do a little compare and contrast.

This episode of the Session will take place on June 5, 2009. Details here: Session #28:Think/Drink Globally

Ron has written about Snake Dog IPA before, but I haven’t. Probably because it’s one of my “go-to” beers; it wouldn’t even occur to me.

Pretty amber color, off-white head. Grassy and peppery and citrus-y. Plenty of hop bitterness for this unapologetic hop-head, with a pleasant lingering aftertaste. I love it.

We had a very pleasant lunch at Capitol City’s downtown location. Their current seasonal offering is an organic saison. I’ve been getting into saisons lately, after having never had them at all.

The pineapple in the aroma was very noticeable, and it was quite good. My wife also had and enjoyed one. Best get one before they’re all gone.

    Beer-a-Day #142

    From the label:

Mountaineer Pale Ale is our unique interpretation of the classic American Pale Ale. This frothy, copper-golden ale is hand-crafted using only the finest malted barley, pure water and a specially-blended brewer’s yeast. Finally, we employ generous amounts of Northwest Ahtanum and Tomahawk hops for a floral aroma and a subtle hint if [sic] citrus in the finish.

Much more floral than citrus, but with a decent amount of hop bite and a nice finish.

    Leinenkugel Classic Amber Review

I finally got around to sampling the new Leinenkugel  Classic Amber. Leinenkugel is not a beer I would normally pick up from the shelves at my local candy store. The name sounds so European that you would never guess that it is made in Wisconsin. (German in origin if you want to look it up)

    leinenkugel-classic-amber

The beer pours a nice amber color with a white head and some head retention. While Leinenkugel  is a subsidiary of Miller/Coors, the linking of the two companies appears to be primarily for marketing reasons, not brewing technique. But, any beer marketing the fact that it is 100% malt tells me they normally add adjuncts… let’s see what it tastes like.

The beer does have some hop aroma and a light kick of hops on the tongue. Overall the beer is light and tasty. It does have a distinct flavor that I can’t quite put my hands on… something like an export; perhaps it is the water.

I have two bottles to review so I invited my lovely wife to have one and gave her a blind taste test directly against one of her favorite brands, Hook & Ladder.  In order to make this an apples-to-apples comparison I had to put Hook & Ladder’s Golden Ale up against it, not their Ember Amber because the Ember is a much richer beer. (my personal favorite from Hook & Ladder)

They matched up quite well, very close in style. I thought the Leinenkugel was a bit crisper with a slightly more hop bite. My wife agreed but didn’t like the lingering aftertaste as much. She enjoyed the “more rounded” (as she put it) Golden Ale better. We both agreed in the end that both beers are best served as a lighter refreshing beer paired with tangy, smoky or spicy fare. German potato salad comes to mind.

Leinenkugel has been brewing in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin since 1867 by the Leinenkugel Brewing Company. Their new Classic Amber is made from two and six row barley and four varieties of hops. (Cluster, Cascade, Mt. Hood & Hallertau) They have several other styles in their portfolio: Original, Light, Honey Weiss, Sunset Wheat, Red, Creamy Dark, Berry Weiss, Oktoberfest, Apple Spice, Big Butt Doppelbock and Summer Shandy.

Heavy Seas Red Sky at NightBeer-a-Day #132

Not too many saisons grace my icebox. I can probably count the number of pints I’ve had on one hand.

Pale yellow; white head. Obviously a Belgian yeast with a lot of complex aromas. Fruity, bubblegum, maybe a little cinnamon. Flavor is complex without overdoing it.

This isn’t something I’d like on a regular basis, but it makes a very pleasant change of pace.

    Estrella DammBeer-a-Day #127

Light and clear; the color of ginger ale. White head dissipates quickly with little lacing. Fruity aroma; pineapples. Taste is light with little to no bitterness. This is better than I expected.

Top Ten Beer Books by Jay

One of my other passions (weakness, really) is books. I love them and I read them voraciously. Borders and Book Crossing are places I never mind going. My browser is on a first-name basis with Amazon.com.

And now my wallet is whimpering, because Jay Brooks just posted his Top Ten Beer Books:

I took a look through my own library of beer books and decided to pick my ten favorites. I also decided to not include guidebooks, fiction or homebrewing books in the list. That essentially leaves reference books and history, which is what I tend to gravitate toward. Some I felt I had to include because of their influence on me once upon a time, even if they’ve become dated over time. So by top ten, I simply mean the ones I like best or find most useful on a regular basis, and not including several popular type of beer books. And of course, I don’t own every beer book, though I do have quite a few. So the list is hardly scientific. You probably won’t agree with my choices, but that’s okay.

    10. The Essentials of Beer Styles by Fred Eckhardt. It’s hard to believe that Fred’s little book is only 20 years old, but it cataloged beer styles in a brand new way, one that’s been picked up by everybody since, from the BA to the BJCP.

    9. Great Beers of Belgium by Michael Jackson. Most of us have a soft spot for the beers of Belgium, and Michael’s book bring them to life in a way no other book has managed.

    8. Ambitious Brew by Maureen Ogle. From the Golden Age to the Silver Age, Maureen’s thoroughly researched history eschewed mythology for fact and remains one of the few records of the early days of craft beer.

    7. Tasting Beer by Randy Mosher. A brand new book, Randy’s book was one that needed to be written, to replace Evaluating Beer, a book with much good information but disjointed and hard to use because of the format and multiple authors. Tasting Beer pulls it all together in one easy-to-use book.

    6. Amber, Gold & Black by Martyn Cornell. Martyn’s pdf-only book takes on many sacred cows of the beer canon and shows us their true history.

Head on over to Jay’s place for the rest, including a large list of honorable mentions.

p.s. I made sure that as many as possible, including the honorable mentions, are available in the Hop Talk Store.

Pale orange with white head. Slightly floral aroma. Clean, slightly astringent. It’s good.

    Sticking with the European imports.

Golden and cloudy. (It’s unfiltered; duh!) A couple fingers of white head. Very aromatic, with a good bit of bubblegum and banana. “Crisp” is a word that comes to mind. Clean and refreshing. I don’t fall head-over-froth for wheat beers, but this is pretty good.

Pale yellow; fluffy white head. Light, grassy, grainy. Heavier than I thought, but good.

Back to the European light lagers. This, at least, is in a brown bottle. However, it’s a subsidiary of Heineken.

Pale straw; practically water. White head which fades quickly. Aroma is light but appears slightly lightstruck. Taste is light and inoffensive. Decent.

Alas, I’m out of green bottles from Europe. This seems like a good one to end on, though.

A nice deep brown with some red highlights. Thick beige head. Deep, malty aroma. Bready, with raisins and a bit of coffee. Yum.

Back to the green bottles from Europe. This, at least, is generally classified as a strong lager. We’ll see if it held up any better on its voyage.

Pale golden color; thick white head. No skunkiness; that’s encouraging. Very “doughy”. Malty and grainy with a nice medium mouthfeel.

By golly, an import that survived!

Rock Bottom Lumpy Dog Light Lager

    Lumpy Dog Light LagerBeer-a-Day #120

I decided to take a break from the disappointments of light lager imports in green bottles. So, instead, I got myself a fresh-brewed domestic light lager that never saw the inside of the bottle. (Besides, my boss invited me to Rock Bottom. How could I say no?)

Light golden color with nice lacing. In the aroma I get a bit of orange zest but it’s otherwise clean. Nicely refreshing with a light to medium body and some pleasant hop bitterness. This is good.
